PAINTING: 'PRIMITIVE FACES BLACK & WHITE' 2008
'Primitive Faces Black & White' was a small show put on in May 2008. The paintings were worked and re-worked over a 2 year period from 2005/6. Paintings like 'Nose Bag' 'Irate Spot' and 'Sperm Tentacle' had been re-worked many times 2005-2008. At the point of thinking that this couldn't go on for ever Le Rougetel plugged in his electric sander and started sanding parts of the paintings down to modify the picture plane's eco-system. Then one day Le Rougetel had a felt tip pen in his hand and started drawing little faces on them. In this show there was the struggle between the figurative and abstract aesthetic; the challenge of space and the frame and the simple opposition of black and white and struggle for colour.
