PAINTING: 'SQUARES TRIANGLES FACES' 2007

Painted November 2007 Squares Triangles Faces was shown as a solo show at Chelsea in March 2008.  Squares Triangles Faces explore a simple geometric world of shape and form that has a life all of its own veering into figuration and back to abstraction. Painted in oils, acrylic and house paint on kitchen cabinet off cuts, canvas, ikea backings to shelving units, ply wood and canvasboard. It was with this series that Le Rougetel seriously began to look at the nature of the frame further, experimenting with a double bar supports rather than quattro bar supports. He began to use screws overtly as part of the frame construction, screwing through the surface of the paintings, attacking and modifying the ecosystem of the picture plane further.

By explicitiy numbering each painting from 1 to 16 with a black marker pen and also crossing out his signature Le Rougetel confronted authorship and curatorial perspectives. They owe something to Guston and his Klansmen and demonstrate that it is not what you paint but how you paint it that matters.
