SCULPTURE: 'Thank gods for Christmas' 2009
'Thank gods for Christmas' - 9 glazed ceramic Primitive Heads placed atop 9 christmas tree trunks, stuck into log pieces, with crushed up Christmas decorations - lived in the Rootstein Hopkins Chelsea Parade Ground 10 - 14 February 2009. It was the first installation by an artist to deliberately interact with the noen strip grid. The piece questioned monotheistic interpretations of the world viewing Christmas as an amalgamation of myth built up over thousands and years, transcending cultures and religion itself - hence thanking 'gods' rather than 'god' in the title.
Le Rougetel was overheard saying:
''The work oozes the viewer with man's primitive, elemental and animalistic tendencies. The use of mutilated christamas trees and crushed up Christmas decorations references man's ritualistic reliance. These primitive scarecrows hold secrets that we will never know. But without the excuse to celebrate something, anything, what the hell would humanity do?''
He very successfully infected this big, outdoor public space.
